Egypt Closes Four TV Stations Allegedly Sympathetic to Morsi
Published at(CAIRO) — Egyptians now have fewer TV choices after a court on Monday ordered four channels to shut down.
The interim government is concerned that Al-Jazeera’s Mubashir Misr outlet, the Muslim Brotherhood’s Ahrar 25 and Islamist channels Al-Quds and Al-Yarmuk are inciting viewers to protest against the new military-backed regime.
An administrative court ordered the closures, which are in addition to several channels that went off the air following the July 3 ouster of President Mohamed Morsi.
In spite of the government’s crackdown on free speech, demonstrations are still occurring in Egypt that call for the reinstatement of Morsi, who is currently detained and now faces charges of murder for an incident last December in which anti-Morsi protesters were killed.
Al-Jazeera has been targeted lately by the government with three foreign journalists from its English language channel having been expelled earlier this week for supposedly failing to produce correct press accreditation.
