Egypt Won’t Completely Take Apart Muslim Brotherhood Just Yet

The latest action occurred Monday when an emergency court banned the activities of the Brotherhood and ordered the group’s assets frozen.

However, the military-backed government appeared ready Tuesday to hold off on implementing the ban until the Brotherhood appeals the verdict, which it’s more than likely to lose.

The Islamist organization is basically a shell of its former self anyway with President Mohamed Morsi having been ousted, most of its top leaders in custody and much of the public willing to return to a more authoritarian-style regime.

An Islamist-based constitution Egyptian voters chose last year was also suspended with Morsi’s removal and is being changed to reduce the powers of the president, particularly over security forces, which wield most of the real political power in the country.
