Immigration Reform Supporters Arrested Outside Capitol

Photodisc/Thinkstock(WASHINGTON) — Although the immigration reform bill seems to have been pushed to the back burner, some of its most ardent supporters haven’t forgotten about it.
Their passionate endorsement of the measure to reform the immigration system led to their arrests Thursday outside the Capitol.
Police were called in when more than 100 women taking part in the We Belong Together: Women for Common Sense Immigration Campaign staged a sit-in on the street that caused a major traffic tie-up.
Even as they were being led away by cops in plastic handcuffs, the women kept shouting “Si se puede” or “Yes, we can!” After being processed, they were eventually released.
The act of civil disobedience intended to spur action from lawmakers on immigration was carried out by protesters from more than 20 states.
The demonstration didn’t end with the adults. Children who accompanied them planned to take red, “hearts of courage” cookies to House leadership.
The immigration reform bill was passed by a bipartisan group of senators earlier this summer but remains dormant in the House where it probably won’t be addressed until next year at the earliest.
