Direct flights between the U.S. and Iran were halted in 1979 after the Islamic Revolution that overthrew the shah.

The request, which was reported by the ISNA news agency, comes just days after Rouhani’s groundbreaking phone call with President Obama.

The conversation marked the first time in more than three decades that the leaders of the two countries had been in contact.

Rouhani, a Muslim cleric, was elected as a moderate and was sworn into office in August.

Earlier this month, he tweeted a blessing to mark the beginning of Rosh Hashannah, the Jewish New Year, a move that is in sharp contrast to the venom towards Jews from Iran’s previous president, Mahmoud Ahmadinejad.
