Given that Iran’s leadership won’t even refer to Israel by its name, the tweet from Rouhani’s English-language Twitter account wishing Jews “a blessed Rosh Hashanah” is unprecedented.

The full message reads: “As the sun is about to set here in #Tehran I wish all Jews, especially Iranian Jews, a blessed Rosh Hashanah.”

Rouhani’s account also posted a photo showing someone worshiping at a Tehran synagogue. There are an estimated 25,000 Jews living in Iran.

There has been no formal acknowledgement from Rouhani’s office confirming that the tweet came from the president and in fact, a spokesperson went as a far to deny that he even has an account. Yet, the spokesperson did not dispute that the Rosh Hashanah greeting might represent Rouhani’s views.
