Davuluri overcame 52 contestants, representing the other states, plus Washington, D.C., Puerto Rico and the U.S. Virgin Islands, to win the crown.  Miss California, Crystal Lee, was the first runner-up.

For the talent portion of the pageant, Davuluri — the first woman of Indian descent to be named Miss America — performed a Bollywood fusion dance.

Davuluri succeeds another Miss New York, Mallory Hagan, who won the 2013 edition of the pageant last January in Las Vegas.  Her run with the crown was cut short as a result of the event’s move back to Atlantic City, where it began in 1921.

The ABC telecast of Sunday’s pageant was hosted by Good Morning America co-anchor Lara Spencer and The Bachelor’s Chris Harrison.
