“Navy officials have concluded that given the time elapsed since the incident, aircrew survivability was extremely unlikely,” read a statement from the Navy. “The location of the crash site is known, and an extensive area has been searched multiple times by various ships and aircraft.”

On Sunday, the Knighthawk helicopter crashed in the central Red Sea after conducting a landing on the deck of the USS William P. Lawrence, a guided missile destroyer. The crash is under investigation, but it did not occur because of “hostile activity,” the Navy said.

The names of the two missing crew members will be released pending next of kin notifications.
