Netflix’s Strategy for Obtaining More Subscribers

Matthew Lloyd/Getty Images(NEW YORK) – Netflix is monitoring illegal downloading sites as it chooses content to add to its streaming-video service.
By observing piracy sites, the company is able to determine what shows are popular and lure viewers to a site that offers the same content, only with a better user experience and less risk of legal fallout.
Reed Hastings, Netflix’s chief executive, told Bloomberg Business that whenever Netflix is launched in a market, the level of activity on piracy sites drops.
