Possible US-Iran Meeting at United Nations
Published at(NEW YORK) — A possible meeting is in the works between President Barack Obama and the Iranian President Hassan Rouhani at the United Nations next week, according to The Guardian.
This would be the first face-to-face encounter between a U.S. and Iranian leader since Iran’s 1979 revolution.
Diplomats told The Guardian that the meeting reflects the Iranian government’s eagerness to make diplomatic headway on the nuclear issue, which has been a dilemma for several years.
U.S. officials were hesitant about the possible meeting, but some say the recent Geneva deal on Syria’s chemical weapons has opened up opportunities for global diplomacy.
In an ABC News interview, President Obama told This Week host George Stephanopoulos that he remains hopeful the two can “strike a deal” over Tehran’s contested nuclear program.
