Rays and Rangers Will Play One More to Determine Final AL Wild Card
Published at(NEW YORK) — The Major League Baseball regular season isn’t over for the Tampa Bay Rays or the Texas Rangers.
The Rays beat the Blue Jays 7-6 Sunday and then the Rangers topped the Angels 6-2 to set up a one-game tie-breaker for the final wild card spot in the American League.
Texas will host Tampa Bay on Monday for the right to play Cleveland, who secured the top wild-card spot by beating Minnesota 5-1 Sunday, in a one-and-done match-up on Wednesday. Whichever team wins that game will play a best-of-five series versus Boston.
Texas will start 22-year-old Martin Perez (10-5) while the Rays will start last season’s AL Cy Young award winner David Price (9-8).
“Hands down my biggest game of this year, night and day bigger than Opening Day,” he said. “This is a moment that I want to be in. I want to be able to relish this moment and go out there and have fun.”
