Lieutenant Neger, who works in Afghanistan’s Helmand province, was shot in the neck near police headquarters in the provincial capital, Lashkar Gah.

Police say they have received threats from both Taliban insurgents and drug traders, but neither group has said it carried out the attack.

Lt. Neger, who only uses one name as is custom for many Afghans, is the third senior policewoman to be killed in recent months.

In a recent interview with the New York Times, Lt. Negar said she loved her jobs, and felt it was important that women came forward to work for the police.

According to the BBC, women make up just under 1% of Afghanistan’s police, with 1,600 policewomen serving and 200 more in training.
