American Greenpeace Ship Captain Charged with Hooliganism in Russia

SQUARESPACE CACHEVERSION=1382996898085ROMEO GACAD/AFP/Getty Images(MOSCOW) — Russia has charged Captain Peter Willcox, one of two American Greenpeace activists arrested last month along with a number of other activists, with hooliganism Monday. Last week, Russia said it was dropping threats to charge them with piracy, though that possibility reportedly still remains.

Willcox and about 29 other activists were aboard the Arctic Sunrise when the ship was seized by Russian border guards in September. Members of the crew had previously attempted to use inflatable boats to board a Russian offshore oil platform and were doused with cold water and threatened by security.
 
The other two people charged Monday were a Ukrainian and a Canadian. Three others — two Russians and a Turkish citizen — were charged with hooliganism last week.
