At least 44 people are dead and 246 people are injured from violence in Egypt, the Egyptian Health Ministry reports.

Thousands of supporters of ousted President Mohammed Morsi took to the streets for a day of protests, causing fatal clashes with police.

According to the BBC, 40 of the 44 fatalities are in Cairo, where Egyptian security forces used tear gas and fired into the air to prevent protesters from entering Tahrir Square.

Sunday also marks the 40th anniversary of the 1973 Arab-Israeli war.
