Police say the vehicle veered into the guardrail across from Tiananmen Square near the entrance to the Forbidden City.  The driver and two passengers were among those killed.  At least 38 others — including tourists and police officers — were also injured, Xinhua reported.

Tiananmen Square is Beijing’s main tourist attraction and the site where hundreds of thousands of students protested for democracy in 1989.

Within hours, the site was cleared of debris.  An investigation is ongoing.
