Government Shutdown Comes to Lockheed Martin

Peter Macdiarmid/Getty Images)(BETHESDA, Md.) — Lockheed Martin employees are about to start feeling the effects of the government shutdown. The company announced Friday that 3,000 employees have been “identified for furlough” due to the government shutdown.
The aerospace and advanced technology company is one of the world’s largest defense contractors with 78 percent of its revenues in 2011 coming from military sales, according to global security researcher, the Stockholm International Peach Research Institute. The affected Lockheed employees will be unable to work because the government facility where they perform their work is closed, or their tasks require government inspection that can’t be completed. Other Lockheed projects have received a stop work order.
“I’m disappointed that we must take these actions and we continue to encourage our lawmakers to come together to pass a funding bill that will end this shutdown,” Lockheed President and CEO Marillyn A. Hewson said Friday in a statement. “In an effort to minimize the impact on our employees, we are directing affected employees to use available vacation time so they can continue to receive their pay and benefits. We hope that Congress and the Administration are able to resolve this situation as soon as possible.”
The Lockheed furloughs will take effect Monday, Oct. 7
