The Secretary of State made an unannounced visit to Afghanistan on Friday where he met with the Afghan president in hopes of striking a bargain involving the U.S. presence in Afghanistan and next year’s Afghan presidential election.

The U.S. is hoping for flexibility to conduct counter-terrorism operations, while Afghan officials are concerned about the nation’s sovereignty.

A spokesman for President Karzai said that he and Kerry will engage in a third round of talks.
