After more than 900 years of a southward tilt due to poor planning, the famed Italian tower is now inching towards a right angle.

The technical director of the monument, Giuseppe Bentivoglio, says the tower has straightened by an inch since an engineering procedure carried out 12 years ago. Before that, the tower was slowly increasing its southward lean.

But the straightening of the tower is not exactly provoking relief amongst locals. Each year six million tourists travel to Pisa to gaze at the architectural mishap and snap silly pics where they pretend to hold up the tilting tower — a practice, along with the tourist dollars it brings, that could end when the tower goes straight.
