Just days after Senate Republican leader Mitch McConnell, of Kentucky, helped broker a deal to avoid a government default, a conservative group with ties to the tea party is endorsing the man challenging McConnell in the GOP primary.

The Senate Conservatives Fund is endorsing Louisville businessman Matthew Bevin, calling him “a true conservative who will fight to stop the massive spending, bailouts, and debt that are destroying our country.”

“He is not afraid to stand up to the establishment and he will do what it takes to stop Obamacare,” said the group’s executive director, Matt Hoskins. “We know that winning this primary won’t be easy. Mitch McConnell has the support of the entire Washington establishment and he will do anything to hold on to power. But if people in Kentucky and all across the country rise up and demand something better, we’re confident Matt Bevin can win this race.”

Asked this week whether the Senate’s bipartisan deal to end the government shutdown could spell the end for McConnell, ABC News political director Rick Klein said the Republican Senate leader “has a very strong tea party contender” in Bevin.

“[McConnell]’s support for a deal to re-open the government has only added fuel to the fire,” Klein said.
