Paramedics called to the scene of the Bay Area facility, Valley Manor Community Care Home, said they found most of the staff had left.

Sheriff’s deputies said they took away more than a dozen patients, some of whom were bedridden or in wheelchairs.

Sergeant J.D. Nelson, with the Alameda County Sheriff’s Office, said, “It’s just a terribly sad situation, that people would just abandon them. We’re talking about human beings here. They’re unable to care for themselves, They’re bedridden, in wheelchairs, we have amputees.”

Jean Pong said she was paying the facility $3,000 a month to care for her mentally ill sister, whom she said was abandoned. Pong said, “I think they should be held accountable. I mean, you just can’t vacate and leave your residents without proper care. I mean, this is what you pay for.”

According to KGO-TV, a sign from the Department of Social Services was posted outside the building, saying that the facility was to be closed on Oct. 24.

Officials say they are looking for the owners of the facility.
