Leyland decided to drop the struggling Austin Jackson to the eighth spot, while having Torii Hunter take his spot and hit leadoff.

Jackson’s first plate appearance came with the bases loaded. He wound up drawing a four-pitch walk to give the Tigers their first run of the game.

“It was a big situation right there to try to get something done,” Jackson said. “I think after I’d seen a couple pitches I was able to kind of just take some deep breaths and relax a little bit — and not worry so much about the result, just try to get a good pitch.”

Jackson finished the game with two singles and two walks.

Tigers’ starter Doug Fister gave up just one run in six innings of work while Red Sox starter Jake Peavy gave up seven earned runs in three innings of work.

For the Red Sox, outfielder Jacoby Ellsbury was one of the lone bright spots for the team, as he had four hits and scored a run.
