It’s something the Kaiser Family Foundation’s Dr. Karen Pollitz says will help people decide how much they want to spend.

“So consumers will be, I think in a better position to compare and select health plans based on the value of protection that they’re offering,” she says.

And in the future, Harvard University’s Katherine Baker says you’ll be able to compare doctors and hospitals, as well.

“People don’t want to just want to know how many people does my doctor treat like me.  They want to know what are the outcomes.  Not just crude outcomes like mortality rates, but you know, the rate of functionality after people have joint surgery.  Or the reduction in pain.  Or rate of complication, or re-admission to the hospital,” Baker says.

Those ratings are expected to begin in 2015.
