Bill DeBlasio Elected Mayor of New York City

Spencer Platt/Getty Images(NEW YORK) — For the first time in 20 years, a Democrat has been declared mayor of New York City. Bill DeBlasio, a Democrat, has been elected as the 109th mayor of New York City.

Republican Joe Lhota, who had vowed to continue many of Michael Bloomberg’s policies, delivered a speech Tuesday night conceding defeat in the race.  

According to recent polls, New Yorkers approve of Bloomberg’s record, but are looking for change in style and tone, ABC News affiliate WABC-TV reports.
