A Kremlin statement on Monday quoted Putin as urging Iranian President Hassan Rouhani to take advantage of the “chance to find a solution to this long-standing problem.”

After Monday’s conversation, Rouhani’s office tweeted a series of messages, pointing to “good progress made in recent negotiations.” The tweets did warn, however, that “resorting to excesses could complicate our journey to a win-win outcome.”

This week, the U.S., U.K., China, Russia, France and Germany will hold a second set of negotiations in Geneva. Earlier this month, a deal seemed to be close when French foreign minister Laurent Fabius said that he could not accept the agreement as drawn up.
