Research presented at a meeting of the European Society of Cardiology meeting analyzed data from adults in Denmark. The researchers found that those with psoriasis were more prone to developing heart failure. Additionally, a person’s risk of heart failure increases as the severity of their psoriasis increases.

Psoriasis impacts about 125 million people worldwide, says HealthDay News. The study’s lead author, Dr. Usman Khalid, says that “psoriasis should be considered a systemic inflammatory disease that affects the whole body, rather than an isolated skin lesion.”

While the study did link psoriasis and risk of heart failure, the researchers did point out that they did not prove that psoriasis causes the increased risk of heart failure.
