In a statement Friday, Reid spokesman Adam Jentleson said the Nevada senator was not feeling well and opted to go to the hospital as a precaution.

“Tests have been conducted and everything is normal. He is alert, resting and feeling better,” the spokesman said.

Jentleson added that the 74-year-old Democrat will not be going in to work on Friday as “doctors have asked that he remain in the hospital for observation.”

According to a top Democratic aide, Reid has been talking to his wife, a few senators and his senior staff by phone Friday morning.

Reid has been keeping a more aggressive schedule than usual in the final days before the holiday Senate break. He was at the Capitol until around midnight Thursday, holding two late-night votes, and one aide believes exhaustion could be at play.

Reid has since been released from the hospital, his office said Friday evening. His office said he was treated for exhaustion.
