Katy Perry, John Mayer Spill Details of Their New Duet

ABC/Randy Holmes(NEW YORK) — Katy Perry and John Mayer made their first-ever TV appearance together as a couple on Tuesday’s Good Morning America, as they debuted the music video for their duet, “Who You Love.”
The video features a number of real-life couples, including Katy and John, riding a mechanical bull. Katy said the music video is a metaphor for relationships.
“Relationships are kind of like riding a bull,” the 29-year-old singer said. “You hold on for dear life. Sometimes you get a little buck here and there and sometimes you get things thrown at you, but you get back on.”
John also explained how the duet came about. Apparently, it was a producer’s idea to put Katy on “Who You Love,” on which John had been working for a while.
“I had this little chorus for years and it was, ‘You love who you love.’ And I thought that’s always going to be a great thing someday, to have a song that people could hear and feel that sort of permission,” the 36-year-old singer told ABC’s George Stephanopoulos. “It was really nice to have an unbiased ear and I played it for Don Was, the producer of the record, and he went, ‘Yeah, it’s something.’ And I went, ‘I don’t know.’ And then he said, ‘Why don’t you get Katy to do it?'”
Unlike “Who You Love,” which the two planned to record together, Katy and John worked on another song from Katy’s Prism album, “Spiritual,” rather by accident.
“We kind of messed around in the studio with [it] because we were in the studio making our separate records at the same time,” Katy explained. Finishing her sentence, John added, “And then I come in the studio and she plays stuff and…then I’ll hear a melody because she’ll be writing something and I’ll hear a melody and I’ll be like, ‘Don’t! Don’t!'”
“Or he’ll just pick up a guitar and play something,” Katy concluded.
John, who’s wrapping up his Born and Raised tour soon, also shared that the voice injury that forced him to cancel his spring 2012 concerts, is steadily improving.
“It wasn’t like I woke up one day and I had the whole range of my voice back,” he explained. “It’s like your dad letting you to use the car a little bit at a time. As it goes on, you have to show that you’re responsible with it. And so for me, I’m singing better and better each night.”
