A law, signed by former president George W. Bush, says on Jan. 1, it will be illegal for businesses to manufacture or import the old bulb.  The law angers some who say LEDs are more expensive than traditional lights. But recently LED prices have been slashed and the cost of using them is also cheaper. A normal incandescent bulb uses about $7.00 worth of energy per year, while an LED bulb costs about $1.00.

Other legal alternatives to incandescent bulbs are halogen, compact fluorescent (CFL) and high efficiency incandescent bulbs.

In the meantime, retailers like Home Depot are encouraging customers who visit the company’s website and prefer incandescents to stock up before they are discontinued.
