Gallup’s survey of data encompassing 131 countries reveals that 22 percent of the global population lives on $1.25 or less daily with the top 10 countries on this list from sub-Saharan Africa.

Poverty is at its worst in Burundi and Liberia where close to nine in 10 people live in extreme poverty.

Meanwhile, just over a third of the world’s population scrapes by on $2 or less daily.

The World Bank says its mission is to reduce extreme poverty from 22 percent to 3 percent by 2030, but that lofty goal is only attainable through robust economic growth and the creation of more jobs.
