Piranha-Like Fish Attack Swimmers in Argentina
Published at(ROSARIO, Argentina) — Approximately 70 people, including at least two children, were injured when a school of fish related to the piranha attacked Wednesday in Argentina.
The attack happened as locals were cooling down in the Parana River, along the city of Rosario. A number of serious flesh wounds were reported, and a few people needed toes and fingers amputated.
“This is not normal,” said Federico Cornier, the director of Rosario lifeguards, according to the BBC. “It’s normal for there to be an isolated bite or injury, but the magnitude in this case was great…this is an exceptional event.”
The area has been experiencing a heat wave in recent days.
