Silva was taking on the defending champion Chris Weidman, who won the title from Silva back in July with a first-round knockout. After a first round where Weidman landed multiple punches to stun the challenger, Silva looked to attack the champion with leg kicks.

Unfortunately for the fighter affectionately known as “the Spider” his opponent withstood them. Just over one minute into the second round, Silva suffered a broken leg as he tried another left kick and immediately dropped to the mat, stopping the fight.

Weidman, now 11-0 in his career, retains the title while Silva (33-6) lost his second consecutive bout. There was one other championship on the line as Ronda Rousey (8-0) successfully defended her title in the women’s bantamweight division by submitting Miesha Tate (13-5) via a third round armbar.
