The Moon Has a New Visitor: China

Getty 121513 MoonChina?  SQUARESPACE CACHEVERSION=1387125389904MARK RALSTON/AFP/Getty Images(WASHINGTON) — China says it has successfully landed an unmanned spacecraft on the moon. The lunar probe Chang’e-3 made a soft landing in the Bay of Rainbows, or Sinus Iridum, Saturday night.

The six-wheeled rover called Yutu, or Jade Rabbit, was released from the probe Sunday morning, where it will take pictures and collect samples from the moon’s surface for three months.

China is now the third country, after the U.S. and the former Soviet Union, to land on the moon.
