Three More House Members Opt for Retirement

ABC 121713 RepLathem? SQUARESPACE CACHEVERSION=1387338086256Office of Iowa Congressman Tom Latham(WASHINGTON) — With polls showing public approval of Congress at record lows, three more House members have decided to retire.

One of Speaker John Boehner’s closest House allies, Republican Rep. Tom Latham of Iowa is the latest House member to announce his retirement. He represents a swing district, so Democrats could see a rare chance to pick up a Republican seat.

Republican Rep. Frank Wolf of Virginia has also decided not to run again, after more than 30 years in the House. Tareq Salahi, the man perhaps best known for crashing a state dinner at the White House, announced that he will seek the Republican nomination for Wolf’s seat in Virginia’s 10th District.

And Democrat Jim Matheson of Utah, who barely survived a tough re-election battle in 2012, has decided to retire rather than face a new battle with Mia Love, the Republican mayor of Saratoga Springs, Utah, who came within a whisker of beating him last time. Republicans have long targeted Matheson, who represents one of the most conservative districts in the country now represented by a Democrat.
