Authorities from the Hawai’i County Civil Defense said a woman was behind the wheel of the truck in Paauilo Mauka when the road simply gave way on Monday.

“The truck was actually below road level, completely hidden so it was a pretty substantial collapse in the road,” said Defense Director Darryl Oliveira, according to ABC affiliate KITV.

The driver was able to climb out of the hole. She was taken to the hospital with only minor injuries, according to Oliveira.

The accident came after the area experienced rains so severe that authorities enacted a flash flood warning. The rains set a new rainfall record at the local Hilo Airport and caused landslides along an 11-mile stretch of highway, reports the Honolulu Star-Advertiser.
