Pinal County Sheriff officials told ABC News that 34-year-old San Tan Valley resident Melisah Havens placed a 911 call Jan. 3 reporting that “she had just shot her husband because she thought he was an intruder breaking into their vehicle which was parked outside of their residence.” The car was in the driveway.

Deputies arrived within minutes of the call being dispatched, according to a statement issued by the Pinal County Sheriff’s Office. “When they arrived on scene, they could hear Melisah screaming, ‘Help me, help me.’ Melisah was kneeling over her husband, who was laying face down in the driveway.”

Officials said that deputies also found inside of the Havens’ residence the couple’s three children, ages 12, 10 and 2, sitting on the couch.

“The victim had been shot two times with a shotgun. He was shot in the chest and right hand. Deputies immediately began to render medical aid to the victim until medical personnel arrived on scene and took over,” Tim Gaffney, Pinal County Sheriff’s Office Public Information Officer, told ABC News.

Pinal County Sheriff Paul Babeu said in a statement that the husband, whose name was not released, is intubated and unable to speak. “Once the victim is able to talk, detectives will interview him to try and learn more about what occurred,” said Babeu.

“Melisah told detectives she shot her husband because she thought he was going to burglarize her vehicle. She also said that he had taken her keys and was going to get milk. Melisah declined to provide any additional information after making these statements. PCSO has responded to prior domestic violence calls at this residence,” Babeu said in the statement.

Gaffney said that Havens was booked into the Pinal County Jail on one count of domestic violence and aggravated assault with a deadly weapon.

“Melisah is still in custody, she has had her Initial Court Appearance and her bond is set at $100,000,” Gaffney said. Gaffney said that there is another preliminary hearing set for Jan. 14 at the Apache Junction Justice Court.

The three children were turned over to Child Protective Services.

The court said it does not yet have a record that Havens had retained an attorney.
