Auto Sales Reach Six-Year High in 2013

Kevork Djansezian/Getty Images(DETROIT) — Auto makers had a great year in 2013. Sales figures returned to pre-recession levels finishing with the best numbers since 2007. Figures for December were released Friday, and show sales slowed a bit last month, but overall, 2013 was the best annual performance in six years
“Detroit automakers had a particularly good year because they are … pickup trucks are their strength and so their sales were up extremely strong,” said Michelle Krebs, a senior analyst who covers the automotive industry for Edmunds.com. “Car shoppers shop seasonally, so right now in December we saw very strong pickup sales and SUV sales. I think they’re bracing for a bad winter.”
According to figures released Friday, Chrysler and Nissan sales were up 9 percent for the year, while GM and Toyota rose 7 percent. Ford retail sales were up 14 percent for the year, making the company’s brand the best selling for the fourth consecutive year.
