Vonn said she is “devastated” to miss the Olympics “but the reality has sunk in that my knee is just too unstable to compete at this level.”

Vonn was sidelined for 10 months after tearing two ligaments in her right knee during a crash at last year’s World Championships.  She retore her surgically repaired ACL in a training crash in November. After returning just one month later,  she sprained her MCL during a race at Val d’Isere, France.

Her publicist, Lewis Kay, said in a statement that Vonn “will have surgery shortly.”  Vonn hopes to be ready for the World Championships in Feburary of 2015.

The 29-year-old Vonn won two gold medals during the 2010 Vancouver Games.  She became the first American woman to win an Olympic gold in the downhill.
