Spence has been suspended for three games, beginning on Friday, for violation of an unspecified Big Ten rule.

Head coach Urban Meyer said Spence did not travel with the team to Florida due to a personal matter. The suspension will carry over into the first two games of the 2014 season when Ohio State visits Navy and hosts Virginia Tech.

Spence, an all-Big Ten selection, will be allowed to practice in the spring and can rejoin the team on Sept. 13 against Kent State. The sophomore was second in the conference with eight sacks and had 52 tackles, including 14.5 tackles for loss. Both Jamal Marcus and Steve Miller are said to be the top replacements.

The seventh ranked Buckeyes (12-1) will take on No. 12 Clemson (10-2) in the Discover Orange Bowl at 8:30 p.m. on Friday at Sun Life Stadium in Miami.
