Colonel Meow, notoriously known by all his fawning fans as the “The Angriest Cat in the World,” died Wednesday evening, leaving behind a legacy far beyond any other feline’s dreams.

“Colonel Meow passed away yesterday evening,” his owner, Anne Marie Avey, wrote in a Facebook post Thursday. “I will post more about the details when I’ve had a few days to grieve. Thank you so much for your understanding, Minions. Your love and support has meant the world to us both.”

Meow’s “minions,” to which Avey refers, are the cat’s thousands of loyal followers. The Colonel has 144,000 followers on Instagram and more than 356,000 “likes” on his Facebook page.

Even Colonel Meow’s equally displeased pal, Grumpy Cat, is publicly mourning his passing.

“Rest in peace Colonel Meow. A grumpy day indeed,” the Grumpy Cat wrote on his Facebook page with an accompanying picture of the two crotchety cats hanging out together.

Colonel Meow, A Himalayan-Persian crossbreed, rose to fame when Avey began posting pictures of her fuzzy feline, whom she adopted, with captions usually centered around the cat’s plans to dominate the world and “#spreadthefrown.”

Also an award-winner, Colonel Meow took home the Guinness World Record in Aug. 2013 for Longest Fur on a Cat, coming in at a whopping nine inches.
