Snow Shoveling Not for Everyone

GETTY 1614 Shoveling? SQUARESPACE CACHEVERSION=1389005069121PeJo29/Thinkstock(NEW YORK) — If you live in a part of the country with both snow and particularly cold temperatures, think twice before grabbing your snow shovel.

Dr. Edward Philbin, chief of cardiology at the Albany Medical Center in New York, says certain people should avoid clearing their walks and driveways because cold weather can increase cardiac stress.

Generally, middle-aged and older people as well as those at risk for heart disease should probably ask their physician first if it’s okay to shovel snow.

Philbin cautions, “Remember that this is not an Olympic event, and there are no gold medals” for trying to get the job done in record time.

People who are younger and physically fit without signs of heart problems are the perfect candidates for snow shoveling, so hire one of them.
