His name was submitted by two Norwegian politicians, who believe that the 30-year-old American who now lives in Russia made the world safer from U.S. spy activities.

While many believe that Snowden should be commended for allegedly blowing the whistle on the NSA, the U.S. government wants to try him for espionage, contending leaking massive amounts of classified intelligence compromised national security.

Snowden was actually nominated last year by a Swedish professor who missed the deadline for the 2013 Nobel Peace Prize, which was eventually awarded to the Organization for the Prohibition of Chemical Weapons, the group overseeing the removal of chemical arsenals from Syria.

The deadline for this year’s prize is Feb. 1 with the winner to be announced on Oct. 10.
