The two-time All-Star starting pitcher signed a minor league contract in January and could have made more than $6 million with incentives and award bonuses, according to ESPN.

“I can handle this. But seeing my son in tears when he saw me in a boot and crutches and I told him I wasn’t going to pitch. That was tough,” Mulder posted on his twitter account on Saturday.

Mulder, 36, spent nine major league seasons between Oakland and St. Louis. During that time he pitched 1,314 innings compiling a 103-60 record with a 4.18 ERA, 1.34 WHIP, 834 strikeouts and 412 walks.

Mulder, who was dealing with shoulder problems, pitched in his last major league game in 2008. After two shoulder operations he officially retired in 2009. Mulder has served as an ESPN MLB Analyst since 2011.

Mulder’s last major league win came on June 15, 2006.
