The application was filed by eNews Channel Africa and would be joined by MultiChoice and Eyewitness News. If approved, a 24-hour television channel dedicated to the trial would be launched the day before the trial begins.

The National Prosecuting Authority said on Tuesday that, with some conditions, it would not oppose the application. It was not immediately clear whether Pistorious’ team would fight the application.

Pistorius, a double amputee known as the “Blade Runner” because of the carbon fiber prosthetics he runs on, has admitted shooting Steenkamp repeatedly through a bathroom door during the early morning hours of Feb. 14. He reportedly thought Steenkamp was an intruder in his home.

Prosecutors have charged him with premeditated murder.

Pistorious’ trial is expected to begin on March 3.
