Deibold narrowly edged Paul-Henri de le Rue of France to reach the podium.

France’s Pierre Vaultier won gold after a hard fought battle with Russian Nikolay Olyunin who took the silver medal. Olyunin had won each of his previous heats and led the majority of the final before losing momentum. The Russian announced prior to the Games that this would be the final time he competes at the Olympic level.

Both the United States and Russia added to their medal count with the two countries leading the way with 19 medals each. Deibold’s bronze is the first medal in his Olympic career and the third straight Games in which the US has received a medal in the event.
