The athlete, whose name and gender have not been released, failed an initial doping test Thursday. The results of a follow-up test using a second “B” urine sample are expected soon.

The follow-up test is offered at the athlete’s request, according to the International Olympic Committee.

The Sochi Games are the most tested in Winter Olympic history with officials collecting an estimated 2,453 blood and urine samples, according to the IOC. That’s up from 2,149 in Vancouver, 1,200 in Turin and 700 in Salt Lake City.

Only one athlete tested positive for a banned substance in Vancouver, while Turin and Salt Lake City recorded seven positive tests each.

It remains to be seen whether the latest doping scandal will cost Germany one of its 16 medals, eight of which are gold.

The World Anti-Doping Agency has a long list of banned substances ranging from steroids to stimulants. The type of banned substance found in the German athlete’s sample has not been made public.
