Jonze’s script for Her received the award for original screenplay.  The film focuses on a man in the not-so-distant future, played by Joaquin Phoenix, who falls in love with an operating system.

The prize for adapted screenplay went to Captain Phillips, which is based on the book A Captain’s Duty: Somali Pirates, Navy SEALS, and Dangerous Days at Sea, by Richard Phillips with Stephan Talty.  Tom Hanks stars in the movie version as a captain who’s taken hostage by Somali pirates.

Both Her and Captain Phillips are nominated in the Oscars’ best picture category.

AMC’s Breaking Bad and HBO’s Veep won the awards for TV drama and TV comedy, respectively.

The Writers Guild Awards were presented during simultaneous ceremonies in Los Angeles and New York City.
