IRS Reports Higher Refunds in 2014

cabania/Thinkstock(WASHINGTON) — The Internal Revenue Service’s tax deadline for filing is still more than seven weeks away — April 15 — but the agency says it has already received close to 40 million tax returns.
The IRS says 15 percent more refunds have been issued so far this year, compared to 2013 figures, and the average federal refund has totaled $3,211, up $190 compared with the same period a year ago.
The agency says that while the overall number of tax returns filed so far this year is down slightly, compared to last year, nearly 95 percent of all returns were filed electronically.
The IRS also reports that the number of tax returns filed by tax professionals this year is about equal to the number of returns filed by people who did the math themselves.
