Kessel Scores Hat Trick As U.S. Defeats Slovenia, 5-1

Martin Rose/Getty Images Sport(SOCHI, Russia) — Forward Phil Kessel scored a hat trick as the United States defeated Slovenia, 5-1 on Sunday in the preliminary round of Men’s Ice Hockey.

Kessel scored his first goal at 1:04 into the opening period with an assist from Joe Pavelski. His second came just 3:29 later. The hat trick came at 11:05 into the second period, making him the first American to score three goals since the 2002 Winter Olympics, when John LeClair did it against Finland.

With the win, the United States automatically advance to the quarterfinals.
