Manning Wins Record Fifth MVP Award

Getty S 041113 Manning?  SQUARESPACE CACHEVERSION=1391304394287Justin Edmonds/Getty Images(NEW YORK) — Denver Broncos quarterback Peyton Manning was named the NFL’s Most Valuable Player on Saturday, receiving 49 of 50 votes. It is the fifth MVP award for Manning, the most ever by any NFL player.

The Denver quarterback set new records for passing yards and touchdowns thrown in a single season while leading his squad into Super Bowl XVIII. Manning threw for 5,477 yards and 55 touchdowns while leading an offense that has scored more points, 606, than any other team in league history.

Manning is the third Bronco to win the award, joining former running back Terrell Davis and quarterback John Elway. A 16-year veteran, Manning is the oldest to ever to earn the MVP and now has two more awards than any other player.

The Bronco was also voted the AP Offensive Player of the Year, garnering 33 of 50 votes from the national panel of media members.

Other awards handed out on Saturday included Carolina’s Luke Keuchly being named Defensive Player of the Year and Panthers head coach Ron Rivera earned the AP’s Coach of the Year award. Green Bay running back Eddie Lacy was the AP Offensive Rookie of the Year while New York Jets defensive tackle Sheldon Richardson was named the AP Defensive Rookie of the Year.

San Diego quarterback Philip Rivers was the NFL’s Comeback Player of the Year. Chicago Bears cornerback Charles Tillman received the Walter Payton Man of the Year award for his work with his Cornerstone Foundation.
