Mariners Sign Justin Smoak, Avoid Arbitration

Getty S 4912 MLB%20Baseball%201?  SQUARESPACE CACHEVERSION=1392509199107Rob Carr/Getty Images(PEORIA, Ariz.) — The Seattle Mariners and first baseman Justin Smoak agreed to terms on a contract for the 2014 season that includes a vesting option for 2015, the team announced on Saturday.

Smoak, 27, hit a career-high 20 home runs last season with19 doubles and 50 RBI. He appeared in 131 games at first base.

Smoak was the only Mariners’ arbitration eligible player and was set to have an arbitration hearing next week.

Smoak will get $2.6375 million for 2014 and there is a $150,000 buyout on a $3.65 million option in 2015, reports The Seattle Times.
