(POCATELLO, ID) – Dozens of Middle Eastern students from Idaho State University packed into a planning and zoning meeting at the Pocatello city hall Thursday night. The group wanted to show its support for a proposed Islamic center near the ISU campus. Supporters, including the Portneuf Valley Interfaith Fellowship, say the diversity is good for Pocatello. Several opponents expressed their discomfort at the prospect of religious extremists gaining influence in the community. An estimated 1,400 Muslims currently live in the Gate City and the surrounding area. The city will make a final decision on the mosque’s location by next Tuesday.
